Florida Birds - Watery Wednesday

After only three days in Florida I have seen over 100 species and 2 lifers, Brown-headed Nuthatch and Short-tailed Hawk. I still have a little over four days left and will be heading down to the Keys in a couple days. Right now we are on Ft. Myers Beach.

Here are a couple of the many photos to come from Florida.

Snowy Egret

Laughing Gull

Egrets are so beautiful and beautiful to photograph. I could shoot them all day. :-) And that last shot is priceless! Enjoy the rest of your 4 days. I'm looking forward to more photos.

What wonderful shots. That Egret is so pure and white and Gull is a super shot with the wings half way down.

Great photos! Egrets are so beautiful! I'm not much of a birder but I thought snowy egrets had yellow legs and great egrets had black? One of my friends can do a perfect imitation of a laughing gull...they're so fun to watch! =)

Rob Ripma said...

@Allison - Snowy Egrets only have yellow legs when they are juveniles. When they are adults, they have yellow legs with black feet. Great Egrets always have black legs and feet.

Allison said...

Ok cool. =)
How do you tell a little egret from a snowy egret then?

Rob Ripma said...

@Allison - That can be a little tricky but one of the best ways is that a Little Egret is extremely rare in the United States. Other than that, in the non-breeding season a Little Egret will show some yellow extending up the legs from the feet while a Snowy will not. In the breeding season it can be even more difficult but there are small difference that can be seen such as the Little having only 2 long head plumes and straight back plumes.

Hey Rob, thanks for stopping by my blog today for Watery Wednesday. I'm just a novice getting started...just got a new camera. If you want to get a look at some Sandhill Cranes that wondered through our bean field and nest every other year.... click on the title...What In The Sandhill on my blog...maybe you already did? Really nice photos here on this site. Great job! I live in Warsaw, IN so not far from Carmel...or is that your bro Eric? Great bird watching and beautiful photos! Hey we lived in Louisville for five years about eight years ago...miss it.

Beautiful! I love the egret; especially the golden reflection it casts on the water.

Hi Eric,
Are those birds in jeopardy?
If those are, can you please inform me that, so I can write about them.
thank you
